History

Henderson County High School was established in 1954 and relocated to its current premises in 1969. In 1976, Henderson City High School merged with "County High" making it one of the largest high schools in Kentucky.  THe first band director was Bill Rideout, who later became Superintendant.

Before 1980-81, the band at Henderson County High School was just called the Henderson County High School Band. Former director, David Caldwell felt that the band needed a name with more distinction and personality. Mr. Caldwell used three sources as inspiration for the band's new moniker.

The first source was the high school that Mr. Caldwell attended as a student, Milan High School, Milan, Tennessee. The band there was known as the Milan High School Band and Guard. The first piece was in place, but Mr. Caldwell felt that something was still missing. He didn't think that Henderson County Band and Guard was quite right.

One evening Mr. Caldwell was watching a movie when the second piece of the band's name fell into place. The name of the movie was "Charge of the Light Brigade". The term Brigade stuck. Add to that the school's mascot, the Colonel, and Mr. Caldwell had the band's new name: The Henderson County Colonel's Brigade and Guard.

Mr. Caldwell admitted that he wasn't sure if the name would take root and stand the test of time. Well, it is now twenty-one years later and we still proudly bare the name, Henderson County Colonel's Brigade and Guard!

Thanks, Mr. Caldwell!
